SELF-CARE AND POSTRAUMATIC GROWTH:  A DISCUSSION WITH DRS THOMPSON, CAPRONI, AND KASI

This webinar will focus on understanding our responses to stress and exploring tools for overcoming compassion fatigue (due to primary trauma and vicarious/ secondary trauma). Some self-care strategies to be discussed include: intentional rituals (secular and spiritual), notes of gratitude, nature exposure, art therapy, humor, massage, music, positive psychology, social support, and mindfulness meditation. Posttraumatic growth will be explored as an aspirational perspective, and several guided self-care meditations will be incorporated.

Peter Caproni, Ph.D., is a Florida-certified school psychologist and a Florida licensed psychologist. After completing his clinical internship and post-doctoral year in the New York City area, he worked with Miami-Dade County Public Schools for 23 years, primarily in special programs for at-risk youth. He is a former president of the Dade Association of School Psychologists and served as their Chairperson for Professional Development for 15 years. In 2012, he was jointly appointed to NSU's School Psychology program as Assistant Professor and Doctoral Practicum Coordinator, and the NSU University School he serves as consulting and supervising school psychologist. His current areas of interest include school safety (with special focus on the needs of diverse students and students who identify as LGBT), post-traumatic growth, public policy advocacy, mindfulness, collaborative/therapeutic assessment, and psychodynamic psychotherapy.

Eric Thompson, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor and lead faculty of the School Counseling program at Nova Southeastern University. His research interests include data driven interventions in school counseling, self-care, and wellness emphasizing trauma informed care and multicultural competencies. He teaches in the School Counseling department and has experience working as a school counselor in middle and high school grade levels. Dr. Thompson specializes in contemplative and mindfulness practices and emotion regulation. He has maintained a personal meditation practice for over 20 years and facilitates workshops and webinars on wellness, post traumatic growth, and self-care.

Dr. Iryna Kasi is a licensed psychologist in Florida and Arkansas. Moreover, she is a Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP) and holds a diplomate in school neuropsychology from American Board of School Neuropsychology. Dr. Kasi is trilingual (English, Ukrainian and Russian). She has over ten years of experience working with children, adolescents, and adults both in school and clinical settings. Dr. Kasi is the recipient of the 2019 School Psychologist of the Year – Early Career Award from the Palm Beach Association of School Psychologists (PBASP) and the 2019 School Psychologist of the Year – Early Career Award from the Florida Association of School Psychologists (FASP). Her current areas of interest include: psychological and psychoeducational assessment, school neuropsychological assessment, assessment of culturally and linguistically diverse individuals, and differentiating cultural and linguistic differences from disorders.
