The Department was founded in 2009. An objective reason for the establishment of the department was the need to train specialists for psychological assistance to the population (family psychologist, perinatal psychologist, child psychologist, education psychologist, psychologist-acmeologist, psychologist-gerontologist), as well as for adult education system (teacher of developmental psychology, methodologist).
Head of the Department: Olena I. Vlasova, Professor, Dr. Sc. in Psychology, an expert in Developmental Psychology, History and Methodology of Psychological Science, Human Socialization and Social Skills, Positive Psychology.

The Main Directions of the Departmental Scientific Activity:
- history and methodological problems of developmental psychology, changes in human behavior and activities at different stages of its life cycle (from conception to death), psychological aspects of atypical development;
- methodology of psychological research and history of psychological schools development;
- psychological conditions and factors of directed socialization of a child and an adult, problems of acme-psychology;
- age aspects of mental health support, issues of age crises, autoaggressive and victim behavior;
- educational socialization and psychological support of inclusive education;
- issues of economic, organizational and informational socialization of an individual;
- methodology of creation and implementation of developmental and correctional programs (training, coaching, psychotherapy).
Academic staff of the Department provides professional training for undergraduate students in 053 "Psychology" and "Developmental Psychology", Master students in 053 "Psychology", Masters students of educational and professional program "Psychology of Childhood and Family with the Basics of Psychotherapy", as well as teaching core courses and special courses in Psychology for the students of other specialties studying at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.

Kostiuk Institute of Psychology of NAESU, Institute of Pedagogical Education and Adult Education of NAESU, Ukrainian Association of Educational and Developmental Psychology, Ukrainian Psychological Association, United Nations Development Programme, European Association of Developmental Psychology (EADP), European Academic Network to Support the Learning and Teaching of Psychology (EUROPLAT), leading institutions of higher education in Ukraine, etc.
International electronic edition "Socialization & Human Development: International Scientific Journal" and a Series of scientific publications "Scientific and Psychological Heritage of Classical Universities" are published under the guidance of Developmental Psychology Department.
The Department annually hosts the All-Ukrainian Summer School of Psychology "National Scientific Psychological Schools: History and Modernity".
Every two years it holds the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Socialization and Resocialization of Personality in Conditions of Modern Society", annually – Scientific and Practical Forum "Psychological Support of Normative and Non-Normative Child Development", International Conference for Young Scientists "Personality in Modern Science: Results and Prospects of Research" and others.
