The department was founded in 1970. Objective prerequisites for the establishment of the department were: Providing psychological education, conducting research and development in the field of psychology, training psychologists in the field of industrial production. These conditions determined the first name and direction of the department - "Department of General and Engineering Psychology". In 2008, the department was renamed to the department of "general and organizational psychology". After reforming in 2011 The department was named "Department of General Psychology".

Head of the department: Yurchinska Anna Kyrylivna, Ph.D. in psychology, associate professor.

Heads of the department during its existence: 1972-1979 - Baev Boris Fedorovich, 1979-1982 - Romaniuk Yosif Timofeyevich, 1985-1989 - Obozov Nikolai Nikolaevich, 1989-2007 - Trofimov Yuriy Leonidovich, 2009-2011 - Manoha Irina Petrivna, since 2011 - Daniluk Ivan Vasylovych.

Main directions of scientific activity of the department: General Psychology. Mental processes. Personality psychology. Methodological and theoretical problems of psychology. Experimental psychology.  History of psychology. History of Ukrainian psychological thought. Engineering Psychology. Psychology of work, vocational guidance and professional selection. Psychology of creativity. The Act-oriented approach in the study of mental processes and states.

Teachers of the Department provide professional training and specialization for students of the peciality "Psychology" as well as psychological courses for students of other specialities. The department provides master’s degree specialization in "organizational psychology".

Postgraduates and doctoral students studying at the department specialize in "General Psychology, History of Psychology" and "Psychology of Labor, Engineering Psychology".

The department has an educational laboratory of psychology with the equipment which allows conducting practical and laboratory classes of the courses "General psychology", "Experimental psychology", "Psychological practice", "Personality psychology" at the modern level.
